How long does anaphylaxis take to start?

It occurs within minutes of exposure to an allergen. If not treated appropriately, anaphylaxis can turn deadly very quickly. An allergen may be inhaled, swallowed, touched, or injected. Once an allergen is in your body, an allergic reaction may begin within seconds or minutes. Milder allergies may not cause noticeable symptoms for several hours.

Can anaphylaxis go away on its own?

This is a dangerous and life-threatening situation called anaphylactic shock. Symptoms of anaphylaxis can be mild, and they may go away on their own (most anaphylactic reactions will require treatment). But it’s difficult to predict if or how quickly they will get worse. It’s possible for symptoms to be delayed for several hours.

What does anaphylaxis feel like?

Symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain are clues. They could worsen quickly. They’re also signs of anaphylaxis, so don’t shrug them off as a stomach bug. Sometimes your chest suddenly tightens or hurts when you breathe. Your throat can also feel tight or constricted. This is a common sign of a severe food allergy.

What are some possible causes of anaphylaxis?

  • Previous anaphylaxis. If you've had anaphylaxis once, your risk of having this serious reaction increases. ...
  • Allergies or asthma. People who have either condition are at increased risk of having anaphylaxis.
  • Certain other conditions. These include heart disease and an irregular accumulation of a certain type of white blood cell (mastocytosis).
