Why mental health was overlooked?

More importantly, the neglect of mental health is caused by the prevalent myths and ignorance of the gravity of the problem. Ignorance of the impact of mental problems is one of the critical reasons why mental health is overlooked in the workplace.

Who discovered mental health?

The philosopher and physician, Hippocrates, discovered that illnesses come from “natural occurrences in the body” (Foerschner). As Hippocrates was studying mental illness, he stepped away from the superstitious beliefs and towards the medical aspect of it.

When was mental health discovered in America?

This paper reviews the origins of the current concept of mental health, starting from the mental hygiene movement, initiated in 1908 by consumers of psychiatric services and professionals interested in improving the conditions and the quality of treatment of people with mental disorders.

When did mental health become recognized?

The lobotomy was performed widely from the 30s to the 40s to treat schizophrenia, severe anxiety and depression. In 1946, Harry Truman signed the National Mental Health Act which called for the conducting of research into the mind, the brain and behavior. As a result of this law, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) was formed in 1949.
